Thank you, Hal, for this masterful weaving of stories and recordings to honor the important work of John Lomax and family. So many profound reverberations from their work to ours, and to the incredible people we have been able to work with over the years. Hoorah for your "straight from the horse's mouth" approach and this collection of recordings!

OH, HAPPY DAY!

Recently, I came upon folklorist Suzi Jones' Substack, where I discovered also Hal Cannon's. Both were good friends of the illustrious J. Barre Toelken, who was an Oregon, then Utah folklorist. But Hal appeared missing in action! Until surprise, looky here! Now I know why no one bothered to publish his obituary!

See his tribute, "Barre Toelken is one of my great heroes," Hal Cannon, Western Folklife Center, 1-9-12.

missing in action. I love elusiveness. Yes, Barre was a great friend and mentor and Suzi as well. We miss Barre.

Maybe you would write up the political rift between John Lomax and two of his children.

So interesting you would request this. Bess expressed her regrets at the political rift but though both generations were Roosevelt people the politics of the two Roosevelts represented two vastly different generations of thinking. That said, I think I'll not write about this.
