I enjoyed this...the Carter family, the ruminations on the river...all of it. also the fact that you got some facts wrong and the folks were so polite... very touching....and says a lot about how people respond to your gentle nature...a sensitive person who knows the value of folk music, sense of place and all of that..Hello to Tereasa. I loved Riding the white horse home...I'm nearly 89 now...and still young...and still going to Fishtrap. see our 35th anniversary....video just posted...keep up the good work...your birds were marvelous. Best to the two of you...Janie
I remember fondly your dad's farm. As I remember it you hated it. Farm Chores! I remember the stories of the state prison escapees breaking into the farm house.. Such Fun
Steve, I was so lazy and just wanted to stay home on Saturdays and watch cartoons. Oddly enough, I'm the only one of my siblings who ended up being involved in AG. It was never full time but a part of our life, raising animals. Can't believe you remember the break-in. I have horrible vivid memories of that. Luckily, the perps had flown the coop before we got there. yes, such fun.
The allure of rivers is strong for me too, They are a liquid benediction as they follow a path of least resistance. Your photos and stories have a nice flow to them too.
I'm interested in your farm along the Jordan River. I've biked the Jordan River trail along there by the Armory to Utah Lake. Do you wish you still had that property?
what a lovely way of describing a river, "a liquid benediction." Our farm was between the prison and Camp Williams. It was a hidden gem though I did not appreciate it at the time. In fact, that is what I will write about this week. I have no regrets the family sold it. It's all tract homes now, I'm told.
I enjoyed your story Hal as well as the photographs of one of my favorite places in The contiguous United States. As a long time Portland native the image of the Sternwheeler with Veterans Memorial Coliseum in the background took me back to the Trail Blazer NBA championship season of 1976-1977, those were the days. I've traded the NW and it's natural beauty for the scenic beauty of Southern Utah. I hope to cross paths with you one day, safe travels.
Great memories. We got to go to a Trail Blazer game once but in a more modern vintage. They were playing the Jazz and beat my team pretty soundly. When it is 105 day after day in Virgin I'll have to remember Portland where if it hits 90 people complain.
